Project Engineer for European power system modelling
Project Engineer for European power system modelling(500017)
The mission of Coreso is to proactively support Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to ensure Security of Electricity Supply in Europe. Located in Brussels, about fifty engineers, seconded from their companies or directly hired by CORESO, combine their expertise 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to anticipate the operation both in the short term and the long term, from a year ahead until Intraday (few hours before real time).
Founded in 2008, Coreso encompasses nine European operators, which are also its shareholders (Elia in Belgium, Eirgrid in Ireland, 50hertz in Germany, National Grid in the UK, REE in Spain, REN in Portugal, RTE in France, SONI in Northern Ireland, Terna in Italy).
Within the European context of progressing market mechanisms, continuous growth of renewable energy, ambitious grid development and further harmonization, new coordination challenges are numerous. Coreso aims to build up, together with all partners, the adequate coordinated operational processes to cope with these game changers. To secure operation of the European electricity system represents a truly international challenge.
You have a technical background or education and you are looking for a challenging position? We are giving you the chance to put your theoretical knowledge into practice to work on a key service provided by Coreso, the Common Grid Model (or CGM) building process.
You’ll be working in the CGM service team within the Service Development department.
The Service Development department is within CORESO responsible to support the implementation of activities embedded in the so-called “5 services” (Common Grid Model, Security Analysis, Capacity Calculation, Short and Medium Term Adequacy and Outage Planning Coordination) that are, as foreseen by the European network codes, to be delivered by the Regional Security Coordinators (RSCs) as CORESO. Concretely, CORESO supports this implementation for all Capacity Calculation Regions where one of the shareholders of Coreso is active (Channel, CSE, CWE, CORE, SWE, UK-IR).
The team also takes care to develop and give the needed expertise to support these services.
More specifically, the CGM service team is in charge of mastering the tools and applications used by Coreso to perform the CGM building process. Some of those applications are shared by the 5 RSCs.
Based on the Individual Grid Models (IGM) provided by each and every TSO in Europe in day ahead the CGM building process sets up a unique Pan European model called a Common Grid Model (CGM) that allows Coreso to assess flows and voltages on the High Voltage interconnexions.
The data format of the IGM is changing towards CIM data input (Common Information Model). The CIM is an International Standard (EIC) already used by other energy bodies throughout the world.
The CGM building process is key for all processes run within Coreso (such as Capacity Calculation, Security Analysis, .. ). The CGM service team work therefore in close collaboration with all service teams.
While working within the CGM service team you will gain knowledge into the CIM format, the CGM building process, all applications that are used to create the Common Grid Model as well as all processes runs by the RSCs.
You will have to support Coreso’s shareholders as your colleagues, organise experimentations and testing, with objective to have a CGM building process that can be used in operations at Coreso based on the new CIM format. In this context, you will have regular interactions with Coreso shareholders, Coreso tool providers as well as the Electricity Network of System Operators (Entso-e) as owner of the CGM program.
The activities/topics within the CGM service team cover activities such as supporting processes into the migration towards using the CIM format, updating the existing Coreso applications, communication, internal and external interactions, network modelling as well as IT issues to be solved. Good technical knowledge as well as strong analytical skills are key. Network modelling and load flow tools expertise would be highly appreciated.
As any project engineer, you execute a function based on change. Therefore, your tasks will cover project management activities (scope and approach, planning and work organisation, follow-up and reporting, ..) as expertise activities (contribution to the project deliverables, processes design, tools specifications, results analyses, support after the service Go life, ..).
- You hold a Master degree (or equivalent), including education in power systems or network modelling (Electrical or Electro-mechanical engineering)
- Network modelling and load flow tools expertise would be highly appreciated as professional experience in the energy sector in system operations or operational planning;
- You are able to analyse complex problems and situations, capable to integrate different views and to propose adequate solutions, in a European and multi-cultural context;
- You are a real team player and have strong project management competences (including organisation and coordination skills, results orientated attitude, ability to prioritise, ..);
- You are able to communicate confidently and defend your point of view in English;
- You are interested to work in a changing environment with challenging activities to contribute to Coreso’s development (projects; operational tools and services,…);
- You will be based in Brussels. Travel may be required on a Europe-wide basis.
Appropriate conditions have been developed for the Coreso employees. A complete benefit package is proposed including company car. You will work in a dynamic and international environment that will ensure a very valuable career step for you.
